Clinical-chemical laboratory diagnostics

The Institute of Clinical Chemistry (IKC) provides rapid, high quality and cost-effective laboratory diagnostics for patient care and clinical research. Laboratory analyses are primarily performed for outpatients and inpatients at the University Hospital Zurich, but additional services are also provided for external clients (e.g. hospitals, private laboratories, doctors’ offices).

The directory of services encompasses more than 500 different test parameters and biomarkers. Information about the laboratory parameters provided at the IKC is available in the UZL analysis information system.

Emergency laboratory and general analysis

In the routine and emergency laboratory, all laboratory orders are received by the IKC and prepared for further analysis. It analyzes approximately 150 laboratory parameters by itself, primarily using highly automated methods. This generates up to 10,000 laboratory results a day, 40% of which are reported within one hour after receipt of the emergency orders. These tests are performed around the clock, seven days a week. Related information

Special analytics and molecular diagnostics

In the laboratory for special analytics and molecular diagnostics, we use a range of analytical methods to test amongst others: hormones, metabolic parameters, vitamine and trace elementstumor markers, urine proteins and sediment. Using molecular-biological methods, we look for mutations that are associated with certain diseases (e.g. hemochromatosis) or that influence the efficacy or tolerability of certain drugs (pharmacogenetics).

Drugs and toxicology

We use cutting-edge mass spectrometry methods linked either to liquid chromatography (LC-MS) or gas chromatography (GC-MS) to identify more than 180 parameters in blood and urine. We primarily measure drugs and parameters of toxicological significance, but also endogenous substances. We also perform toxicological analysis 365 days of the year and calculi analysis.
